The devastating effects of the High Level Depression of the Atmosphere that has affected the region of L’Horta Sud, south of the city of Valencia (Valencian Community) have resulted in a terrible balance of deaths, injuries and material damage. They have also revealed the inability of the public administration (regional and central) to manage the crisis, which has led to an exchange of accusations that leaves citizens without leaders and at the mercy of an evident lack of coordination in the means of response and reaction. The Spanish people are stunned and indignant at the reaction of the politicians, which contrasts with the dedication and solidarity of a large part of society. And we are referring not only to the thousands of volunteers who came to help from the first moment, but to many schools and professional groups, private companies and organizations of all kinds, which are carrying out very effective work in the shadows.
For several years, AUG-ARQUITECTOS SLP has been working in several of the most affected municipalities (Torrent, Picanya, Buñol, etc.) and has built a relationship of respect and trust with the technicians and public officials of these municipalities. In addition to direct knowledge of the most affected areas, there is also a link with many people who have suffered enormous losses and have been on the verge of losing their lives.
For those of us who are dedicated to urban planning, this problem affects us very directly and that is why some media have interviewed the urban architect Víctor García Gil on more than one occasion to find out his point of view on this issue.
