The City Council of Cofrentes (Valencia) has begun the processing of the Special Protection Plan for the castle, based on the documentation prepared by AUG-ARQUITECTOS, SLP. The castle is an Asset of Cultural Interest that occupies a prominent position in a watchtower, from which the confluence of the Júcar and Cabriel rivers can be seen. Along with the castle, the urban fabric has preserved the original volumetry of the traditional typologies, but has been losing a large part of the values and characteristic elements of this architecture, as a result of a series of factors that the new plan intends to correct.
Cofrentes is a town that has enjoyed a privileged economic situation, as a consequence of the important economic contribution that it has received every year from the Nuclear Power Plant installed in its territory. But in the medium term, this contribution will diminish until it is extinguished, as the cycle of operation of the Nuclear Power Plant concludes, leading the city council to seek economic alternatives, in a region whose economy depends almost exclusively on the power plant. In this context, the protection and recovery of cultural heritage, which is favored by the Castle’s Special Protection Plan, acquire strategic importance.
The drafting of the Special Protection Plan for the castle of Cofrentes has been subsidized by the General Directorate of Culture and Heritage of the Generalitat Valenciana.
